how do I change the normal template in Word permanently

I thought I manged to find the template but then when i went to save it, it
said to save as, and obviously I wanted to save the original. I tried typing
in normal in the file name but it said that I could not saveit with the same
name. help..

So did you try and change the name. You can also delete the normal.dot by marking it
old and Word will build a new one next time you open it.
Be forewarned that all your customization that you made to Word will be removed when
you do this and you will need to put them back after

To change the default normal.dot, open a new Word document, make all the
customizations you want, then use the Font option to change something (or
not) but check the option to "make default" - when you receive the warning
that this will change all new items, check ok (or yes - using 2010 at the
moment).
