how do i change the pattern on the FACE of a block

I'm having difficulties changing the pattern of a surface of a block. not the
front part, but like the top part for instance. When i play with the shadow
and fill it does really wierd stuff, refuses to do any pattern whatsoever,
and keeps changing thec oolor.

For example


If i give it a specific pattern, and then pick the pattern color, it takes
the pattern color and makes it a solid color instead of implementing the
pattern. Im pulling my hair out here.
