How do I concatenate string for word wrap (e.g. MK 48)?

I work for DoD. Thus I often have to use equipment or system designations
which include letters, a space or hyphen, and then numbers. I would prefer
to have the entire designation wrap to the next line when such a string is at
the end of a line of text and text wrapping becomes necessary. Word Perfect
has for many years (20+) allowed the concatenation of strings of characters
for the purposes of forcing the entire string to wrap. Once my text or
document is finished, I can search out instances of specific strings,
concatenate and designate as a "word", and that instance of the string would
always wrap to the next line if wrapping was necessary as I revise the
document and the string changes position in the text.

Is there a method in MS Word that allows me to do the same? Even better, is
there a method of designating a string that would wrap when necessary any
instance of that string of characters?

You can use nonbreaking spaces (Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar) and nonbreaking hyphens
(Ctrl+Shift+ -) instead of normal spaces and hyphens.

Thanks! I guess this is a case of not having a clue as to how to ask the
question. Nonbreaking spaces and/or hyphens was never offered as a response
when using "help". Thanks again, this will save me loads of time.
