how do i convert a slideshow (.pps) into a .ppt file?

Simple change the extension from .pps to .ppt, or
Open PowerPoint, then click File > Open. Look for the pps file.

What Shawn said and ...

If you are using PPT 2007, changing the file extension doesn't work.
However, opening PowerPoint and then opening the file (from the Office
Button in 2007) will work. You can then Save As (from the Office Button
in 2007) to save it as a PowerPoint Presentation, or you can leave it as
a PowerPoint Show.
