how do I creat a checkbox in a word doc without locking the doc

Want to have a checkbox/drop down form in a word document, but also be able
to write in other parts of the document.

You can use text form fields to permit freeform text entry, or you can
insert section breaks in the document and protect only specific sections,
leaving the rest of the document unprotected. Note, however, that protecting
any portion of a document for forms disables many Word features (access to
the header and footer, for example, and the Bullets and Numbering dialog) in
the entire document.
