How do I create a monogram using one of the letters as a watermar.

I'd like to create a text box and in the text box create a monogram with one
of the letters as a watermark and the other two letters over it. What's the
trick?

Put the background letter in the text box postition it and set its colour to
the colour you wish to display eg a pale grey.
Locate another text box over the top containing the foreground letters and
set its properties to have no border and no fill. Move it around until you
are happy with positioning and then group the two boxes.
