How do I create a toolbar button to insert a symbol in Word?

I want to be able to insert a symbol directly into my document by clicking on
a button on my toolbar. Is there a way to do this?

Yes. What I would do is insert your Symbol while the Macro Recorder
is turned on. (Be careful to not program any extra keystrokes as
those will also be part of your clicking on the button.)

Then follow the instructions found here for adding the macro to one of
your toolbars, or creating your own toolbar.

Another alternative to what you want to do, is to create an
AutoCorrect Entry. This means that you would type a set of keystrokes
which would convert your keystrokes into the symbol. For instance, I
type s( and the § symbol is inserted. To do that, you would insert
your symbol using the insert menu, you would then highlight only the
symbol. Be careful to not select an additional space, or the hard
return at the end of a sentence. Then from the Tools menu, select
AutoCorrect Options. Key in a keystroke sequence that you won't
normally type. For instance in my example, I might type s) if I were
referring to a numbering sequence. Then you can click the Add button.

Now, just type your sequence. Please note that if your sequence ends
in a letter, you will need to type a space after the sequence to
confirm to Word that you are finished typing and are now ready for the
change to the symbol. I have also used abbreviations to help speed up
my typing in the same way. For instance I type ASPI and Word changes
it to American Sewer & Plumbing, Inc.

I hope that helps. If not, be sure and let us know.
