A more pertinent question would be: How did you get through elementary
and high school without writing an essay?

Amen. I was forced to write essays in the seventh grade.
And things got progressively more difficult from that
point. Wouldn't be surprised to learn of the existence of
a "Dummies for Essays" book. Search for one on Amazon.

Even though you apparently missed out in grades 4-12 (not surprising, given
the quality of education today), I'd like to tell you about my daughter's
rags to riches (writing-wise) experience, but this group is all-business and
they'll complain, so I'll just say, you can still become an excellent writer.
Become an expert note-taker and outliner. Start a daily journal and get
used to expressing your thoughts in an organized fashion. Read and write
with a dictionary and thesaurus beside you. Others have given you good
suggestions. Here's something I saw (but have never used) a few weeks ago
and thought looked interesting enough to send to two grandsons who will be
starting college next year.
