How do I customize birthdays, holidays in Publisher (calendar)

I like to create a family calendar each year for xmas. Is there a way I can
associate an event with a given date so that it will automatically be updated
each year?

Thus, for the 2006 calendar, I would put "Joe's Birthday" on Jan. 15. Then
for 2007, 2008, etc. all I have to do is update the date range and the
message is automatically displayed on the correct date/day? Do I really have
to buy Calendar Creator, etc. to get this kind of functionality?

You cannot do what you want in Publisher.
Yes, if you want that functionality you will need to buy Calendar Creator.
