How do I deal with headings ending with periods in a TOC?

I am creating a table of contents from headings that are full sentences--they
end with periods. The periods must be in the headers, but must not be in the
table of contents (i.e, they must be either stripped or blended with the dot
leaders). Is there a way to make this happen?

I think you have to look up TC fields in Word help, and use them to
create your table of contents. This could be rather tedious, though,
especially if you have a long document.
