file someone e-mailed me refuses to be deleted.

It's not a silly response - that's how you do it.
Perhaps if you explained what you mean by "refuses to be deleted". *Any*
file can be deleted.

That's EXACTLY how it's done. The question for you is where did you put
the file that it "can't be deleted"? At the least try booting up in Safe
Mode, and then delete it. And if you believe that's a silly reply too, I
seriously suggest you sign up for some basic computer classes.
