How do I delete a linked object in Powerpoint 2000?

I inherited a Powerpoint presentation that requires updating. Upon
double-clicking a slide I see that it is linked to an excel file (which is
long gone.) I have a new excel file with which I would like to replace the
'long gone' one. I attempted to "change source" under "edit", "links", but
that doesn't appear to work. I attempted to "insert", "object", "existing
file" and the new file appears in the linked file list, but does not replace
the old file in the slide I am working with.
I am assuming that once I successfully link my spreadsheet to my slide, that
the slide will automatically be updated upon changes made to the excel file.

Any help will be much appreciated.
