How do I delete event categories when syncing?

I

irchamandy

I sync Entourage with a Treo 650 running Palm OS. I tried deleting
unused event categories in Entourage and then syncing with my Treo.
After syncing, all of my categories returned. I then tried deleting
the categories in Entourage and doing a sync where the computer
overwrote everything on my Treo (in case the Treo stored the
categories too and was "giving them back" to Entourage when syncing).
Even when overwriting the Treo, the categories reappeared after
syncing. How can i permanently delete event categories?

Try deleting them both in Entourage AND on your Treo prior to the next sync.
See if that makes a difference.

categories.

Can you overwrite them using sync?
i'm not exactly sure what you mean. please read my first post because
i think i address it there.

Here is your first post:

-----------

When Entourage writes to Sync Services, it's writing to the Truth. Entourage
is not synchronizing with your Treo but with the Truth. Apple's iCal,
Address Book, iSync, .Mac, Microsoft Entourage, and any other application
hooked into Sync Services syncs their items with what is known as the Sync
Services Truth. When a new event is added in Entourage, it goes to the
Truth. When a new event is added to iCal, it goes to the Truth. When iSync
needs to know what events need to be added to a device, it asks the Truth.

I imagine that your categories are in the Truth and even though you delete
from one, it's being added back by the Truth.

There's a dialog that pops-up in Entourage when you turn on synching of a
calendar or address book that asks something like: "You have enabled Sync
Services for a folder, do you want to?"

Replace Entourage items with Sync Services items
Replace Sync Services items with Entourage items
Merge Entourage items with Sync Services items

After selecting one of these options, all changes in anything that talks to
the truth will be synchronized to any application that listens.

The above is excerpts from BASICS OF HOW SYNC SERVICES WORKS

Read the entire page to help making your choices and hopefully that will
clear up your problems.

It looks like this is a solution if I am using iSync to sync Entourage
with my Treo. Is this true? I am actually using the Entourage
conduit to sync. If the Entourage conduit also uses the Truth
(interesting name!), then I will dive into this solution. If it
doesn't, will this solution still work or no?

Though Diane, that's only true if you do indeed sync through
SyncServices.....

I doubt it's the case here because categories are simply not supported
through SyncServices (and there has been no reference to The Missing
Sync)

If you sync directly through the Palm software, then (and only then)
you have support for categories.

Apparently there is a problem with the Palm app. Modifying the
categories in Entoruage should have marked the items as recently
modified and forced an update on the Tréo.
I would consider taking care of the categories in Entoruage and setup a
sync to replace all items on the Tréo (then sync normally for al
further syncs).

Well it's not really using iSync, but using the SyncServices to sync
with a software like The Missing Sync to the Tréo.
The problem is that this method doesn't support categories at all and
they are simply ignored during the sync,

Well I'm saying that there are much better syncing solutions out there,
but I'm not sure it will do you much good since Categories will not sync
between the Mac and the phone through them,
