HOW DO I DELETE SHAPES THAT ARE IN SPREADSHEETS?

I have tried highlighting the objects/autoshapes and selecting delete but
they will not go away. Is there a setting that would cause objects to be
unable to be deleted. Thanks,

try CUT instead of delete
