How do I design a new calendar view?

Is there a way to design a new calendar view? I'm not looking to design a
new appointment form, but to change what is displayed on the day/week/month
view. Minimally, I'd like to place an icon in each day of the week or month.
As far as I can tell, I can only place text in the appointments and thus
only text shows up in the day/week/month view.
