Your question is best asked in a newsgroup for your Mothers version of
Windows. The procedure for limiting updates does vary with the version of
Windows.
In general:
You can avoid receiving updates for other Microsoft products such as
Office.
You can avoid receiving recommended updates {at least in Windows 7}
You can set Windows update to notify only so nothing, other than ID, is
downloaded until you choose to install.
You can choose not to install a Service Pack via download and wait a
month or so until Microsoft releases the Service Pack on CD {usually low
cost}. Note: Microsoft also releases Service Pack updates for Office on CD.
