I want 4 concentric circles showing (having a common centre) so that I can
insert text between into each of the 3 annular rings created by the
circumference of each circle.

How about creatng 4 circles (using shapes) of the appropriate sizes and then
use Align Centre and Align Middle to make them concentric. Then group them
to ensure that they remain so!

The text sounds a little more difficult. I guess Word Art will do it but I
use that infrequently.

cheers
Chris

Which version of PowerPoint? In PowerPoint 2007 there is a SmartArt you
could use. And add the text with WordArt.

One other way to get the concentric circles is to:

1. Display the grid on the slide using View | Grid and Guides... and turn it
on.
2. Click on the Oval autoshape from the Drawing toolbar.
3. Select a location on the grid where the grid lines intersect and draw a
cirle while keeping Ctrl and Shift pressed.
4. Draw the largest circle first.
5. Repeat steps 2 thru 3 for as many circles as needed.
