How do I expand a filter drop-down box?

How do I expand a filter drop-down box from the 1000 entries allowed to fit
an entire range of cells?

You don't.

You work around the 1000 limit by using the "Custom" feature with "contains" and
"equal to" and "does not contain" and stuff like that.
