How do I fix my system from hanging when opening files?

When I try to open any MS Office program (i.e.Word or Publisher) related data
file using File/Open, the system hangs. I can open the files by going to My
Documents, selecting the file and double clicking, however, then when I try
to Save as, the system hangs. No error messages appear.

I have tried the following:

1. Re-opening the program
2. Re-starting the computer
3. Other programs (like MS Works Word processor) - only MS Office has the
problem.
4. System Recovery. This worked for 24 hours and now the problem has
re-appeared.

Appreciate your help.

Windows Update KB908531 has been reported as the culprit causing the
problems. Those who remove it find it clears up the problem. Of course,
with automatic update enabled, it will continue downloading.

Thank you very much. I've actually contacted Microsoft and finally resolved
the problem. The whole problem started with Windows Update. We tried
several things but it actually was quite simple. I only need to change a
file extension from "exe" to "old" and the file name was "verclsid".

Renaming verclsid.exe to .old fixed the problem on one of my pc's. This started happening yesterday. The other pc started working on it's own with out the rename!? We were about to switch to Apple.
