How do I fix page numbers that have changed after adding sections

We're working on an extensive research project and had the entire document
formatted to our liking. After completing our research we went back to add
the last couple chapters, including section breaks, and from chapter 3
forward all of the page numbers are wrong. How can I fix this? I've tried
using the "link to previous" button, or adding page numbers again, but
nothing works the way I want it to.

Make sure that each section has page numbering set to "Continue from
previous section."

But what about when the page numbers already exist, and they need to be
changed? I had to deal with the "continue from previous" button when this
was intially written; playing with it now that things are messed up doesn't
seem to do the trick. Any other suggestions?

If there are Continuous sections beginning in the middle of pages, the
problems often originate there. You have to either insert a temporary page
break in order to access the number formatting from the header/footer or
*cautiously* use Insert | Page Numbers to access the number format, being
careful to use Close rather than OK to exit the Insert Page Numbers dialog.
