How do I fix the "MAPI32.DLL is missing or the wrong version" erro

Everything was working fine. Then I tried installing the Offce 2007 Beta. Now
all I can get out of my system is the infamous "Mapi32.dll is missing,
corrupt, or the wrong version" error. I ran fixmapi.exe and that didn't help.
Then I deleted ALL installed MAPI files I could find (Yes, I DID make sure I
was searching system files and no files were left invisible or hidden) and
ran the util again. No joy. Then I uninstalled Office entirely (even the 2003
that had been in place) and ran the util again. No joy. Then I reinstalled
Office Pro 2003 and started looking for help. Everything on the system works
fine EXCEPT Outlook. I hadn't installed any software at all between the time
that things were working and the time I installed Office 2007.

I had the same problem and I fixed it by 1) uninstall desktop search, 2)
reinstall Office 2007 pro

Desktop Search as in Microsoft desktop search? The only desktop search that I
know I have installed is Google's Deskbar. That's been in place for over a
year, so I doubt that could be causing a problem. Windows XP's search
function can hardly be classified as a desktop search.

On the plus side, I've fixed the problem by restoring to an earlier System
Restore point. I still don't have a clue why fixmapi failed to take care of
the problem, nor why Office 2007 beta caused it in the first place, but I'm
going to do 2 things before I retry the install: Make sure I have a verified
recent backup of the C: drive and I've created another restore point. Oh, and
I think I'll grab a copy of the current (working) version of MAPI32.DLL and
stash it in a safe place (offline).
