How do I free space on local disk D without loosing programs?

I keep getting an error that says "You are running low on Disk space on Local
Disk "D". Click here to free space on this drive by deleting hold or
unnecessary files. " Then it says, Disk Clean Up free up on HP Pavillion C
may take a few minutes. My system says I have 73MB free space. Hoew do I free
additional space without sacrificing my programs. I only have 25 things
installed, including office Professional 2003. My machine has 144 gigs, 135
are available, but the 5.51 GB D drive only has 43 MB of free space. What can
I do to free op enough space so I can use my system tools and updates, I
can't even defrag.

You could try posting this to a group for your operating system since this
has nothing to do with Microsoft Office, which this group supports.

I would but Widows XP was not listed in the available subjects. I have never
done this before so I don't know the ropes.
