how do i get it so the tab doesn't affect the whole paragraph?

Tab settings are for paragraphs; there's no way around that. What are you
trying to accomplish? Let me guess:

1. You're pressing Tab to create a first-line indent (not the best way,
anyway).

2. You're getting a left indent instead.

If I've guessed right, you have two options:

1. Instead of pressing Tab, use Ctrl+M, which will indent the first line to
the first built-in tab stop.

2. To restore the usual behavior of the Tab key, disable the indent option
as follows:

a. In Word 2000 or earlier, clear the check box for "Tabs and backspace
set left indent" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.

b. In Word 2002 or 2003, clear the check box for "Set left- and
first-indent with tabs and backspaces" on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of
Tools | AutoCorrect Options.
