How do I get notification that a E-mail has been read?

I work at a Dental office and we are starting to Confirm appointments Via
E-mail, how do I set my E-mail to notify me that a message has been opened
and read? I guess this is a Tracking Question, I have looked in that section
but it does not seem to be working. I sent an E-mail from my office account
to my Hotmail account marked as "request a read" and nothing was sent back to
the Outlook account to notify that my hotmail account read the
E-mail!...Help...Very confused!

sorry this is the forum for MS ACCESS databases! try one of the more specific
forums!

I think that it only works when you send to another Outlook or Outlook
Express user; when I send to my Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail accounts, I never
get asked for a read receipt!

It also depends on whether the recipient chooses to send them or not. This
means that when you don't get a read receipt, it does not mean that the
recipient has not read the message. It means that the recipient may not have
read the message, or may have read the message but chosen not to send a read
receipt. Most users will soon learn to turn the option off (otherwise you're
confirming the validity of your e-mail address to spammers) which makes the
feature of very limited usefulness in my opinion.

The spammers and script-kiddies have succeeded in making it impossible for
me to use a real e-mail address in public newsgroups. E-mail replies to
this post will be deleted without being read. Any e-mail claiming to be
from brenreyn at indigo dot ie that is not digitally signed by me with a
GlobalSign digital certificate is a forgery and should be deleted without
being read. Follow-up questions should in general be posted to the
newsgroup, but if you have a good reason to send me e-mail, you'll find
a useable e-mail address at the URL above.
