how do I get office 2003 word to display a new file I open

Recently whenever I open a new file in Word 2003 it "disappears" and I have
to click on the task bar a couple of times to make it appear. any idea why
this is happening - I am running XPHome SP3 and Offcie has all necessary
updates and patches.
