Pay for the Hotmail account so you can get WebDAV access to Hotmail
which Microsoft's e-mail clients support (Outlook and Outlook Express,
when you define an HTTP account). There's been plenty of news reports
about the change in Microsoft's policy regarding discontinuing WebDAV
access to *freebie* Hotmail accounts, like
http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/09/27/HNhotmailoutlook_1.html.
You'll have to pay if you want to access Hotmail from Outlook [Express],
or find a different freebie e-mail provider that does include POP3/SMTP
access (or you find a protocol converter proxy to provide POP3/SMTP
access, like YahooPOPs to access freebie Yahoo accounts; the paid Yahoo
accounts provide POP3/SMTP access).
According to some reports (but for which I've never found anything
corroborative at Microsoft), freebie Hotmail accounts created before
September 27 will continue to allow WebDAV access until March 2005.
Freebie Hotmail accounts created after that will not permit WebDAV
access and those users will have to use the webmail interface to Hotmail
or pay for it. Actually, it seemed like Microsoft dropped WebDAV access
at first and then restored it for Hotmail accounts that were already
defined as of their policy change date. However, users have noted off
and on problems with WebDAV access since the policy change. There's
only 3 months until WebDAV disappears completely for all freebie
accounts, so it is time for you to consider if you want to remain with
Hotmail, continue to use a freebie account and get forced to use the
webmail interface, pay for Hotmail, switch to Yahoo and YahooPOPs to
permit POP3 access to Yahoo Mail, or use some other freebie POP3/SMTP
service or pay for it. Say bye-bye to WebDAV access to freebie Hotmail.
