How do I get rid of the small arrows everywhere?

Open one of your Microsoft Office applications, such as Word,
and from the Toolbar select: Tools > Customize > Options
ans place a check next to "Always show full menus".

I thought maybe she was talking about tabs in Word when you have
non-printing characters set to show.

Me too, in which case she should choose Tools - Options - View, and look at
the Formatting Marks section.
