Make this registry change.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Search]
"DisableDownloadSearchPrompt"=dword:00000001

thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I must report that the registry
key was already set correctly, but I still have the unsightly "Click
here to enable Instant Search" bar taking up valuable screen real
estate. And yes, I've restarted both outlook and Windows, with no effect.

Any other ideas?

Hi DarkRats,

Thanks. It was, of course, not selected.

However, I closed Outlook, changed the registry setting to 0, reopened
outlook, closed it, changed the registry back to 1, reopened outlook, no
dice.
So, I did the same with the setting in the GUI options, turned it on,
Apply, OK, and then turned it off, Apply and OK, and guess what - that
ugly thing is gone! Thanks for your help.
