How do I get rid of unread msg indicator on user account login?

I keep getting a message under my user account logon that I have 2 unread
messages. I have gone into Outlook and selected all messages several times
and even rebooted the PC but the messages are still there. How do I get rid
of these messages and even prevent the message from showing up at all?
