how do I get the names in a distribution list to sort by last nam.

my contacts and address book are set up to add new entries as
last, first. But when I built a distribution list it uses a first name,
last name format. where does the name field in the distrubution list come
from?

Depends on your Outlook version and how and when you created the members of
the DL.

The outlook address book is probably set to use first, last. It is by
default, for some reason. Find the properties of the Outlook Address Book
service & change it to "file as".

If you post in here always include your version of Outlook as methods vary
by version.
