how do I give an elevated look to a rectangle?

Please use the message text additionally to the message subject. Your
question is so short that we can only guess what you want. Maybe you shoud
use the 3D-effects (on the drawing toolbar) for your rectangle?

Best regards,
Ute

For some reason, it gave me an error message to the original post.

Instead of using the rectangle shape, use the beveled rectangle shape. Turn
off the lines, and then use the yellow diamond to adjust the bevel. Makes a
great looking 3D autoshape. Then, if you want, add a little shadow to make
it pop.

Do you mean floating above a shadowed area? If so, you can create cool soft
shadows using PowerPoints Fill Effects. Let me know and I'll give you more
details.
