Well, to start with, Windows 98 is an operating system and Office 2003
is a set of productivity applications (Word, Excel, etc.) which run on
the operating system. It does not run on Win 98. You need to upgrade
your OS to Windows 2000 SP3 or Windows XP.

I've seen the system requirements. My question is: without having to buy a
million programs to update, what should I buy to get my Windows 98 upgraded
to the Office 2003 edition. (I'm thinking probably a new computer!)

computer user you are.)

Windows 98 is an operating system. Office is a collection of programs. You
cannot run Office 2003 on a computer that uses Windows 98. You would have to
pay to upgrade your operating system as well as purchase Office. And even
then you may need to bump up some of your hardware, depending on what you
already have.

You're asking what you see as a simple question but unfortunately there
isn't a simple answer.

Not always an plausible option - says she with a 6½ yr old system running XP
Pro w/ Office 2003 and maxed out with 384MB RAM. <sigh>

I usually grow my own, but me wifey's puter died a few months ago and I
didn't have time to build one so I got her a Dell for waaaayyyy cheaper than
I could build one. They were running a TV promo. For her use it was
perfect...and I had a good copy of Orifice XP so she's all set for under 6
bills including a 17 in LCD. However, every now and then I hear her slamming
the mouse down on the desk...that's like kicking the TV to get better
reception (?).
