How do I import images to FP images folder?

This has got to be a very simple step as everyone just says 'import them' or
'drag and drop'. I am using Frontpage 2000. The books, including Frontpage
2000 for dummies, feel everyone should know this and do not offer an
explanation of what you open and click on to get things in place to do this.
I am just not getting it! I do not know how to get my page in Frontpage set
up to do this.

Does not make a difference how you get the images there. You can use
FrontPage Import, Windows Explorer, save as, drag/drop. The main thing to
consider is that the images must reside somewhere in your web. This is for
all images, buttons, etc.

If you use Windows Explorer, then you need to also run Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks to make sure
the FP index the files. Best to use drag/drop or the File Menu | Import Command.

That's not really a problem. I drag them in all the time, and FP always
finds them without recalculating hyperlinks.

May not always happen and can be dependent on the version of FP and/or Windows being used, and if
working with disk-based or server-based webs / sites, whereas drag/drop or importing eliminate FP
not finding the files.

I never had a problem with doing it with any of the above methods. When you
start FP it always sees the files.

Hate to argue with you on this,You DO NOT have to use IMPORT! Import is
just a FP convenience. Uses the same interface as other windows file
manipulations. FP has ALWAYS found file even after I've saved as from an
email attachment. Ya gotta know how to use the tools. BTW, this is not
2003 or windows version specific, I've been doing it for years. Try a copy
paste using explorer and see for yourself. You may need to refresh, but
it's there. Recalculating is unnecessary.

If you use Windows Explorer or Save As *always* run
Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks
This ensures that meta data is created and/or updated, especially if a file
is being replaced. (You *might* get away with not recalculating if it is a
new file [no guarantees, failures will happen], but replacements *must* have
the meta data updated.)

I hope it continues to work for you in this manner.

Wes -

Beg to differ. If you're saying that you can, say, generate an image in
Photoshop and then Save As directly to an Images folder in an FP web, that is
incorrect. FP won't know the file is there in that case.

No, I don't do that from another program. Meant to say I save as when
receiving email attached photos, etc.
I do use import if I am working with FP at the time.

W

Wes

Follow-up...I just created an image using PSP, *saved as* in a web folder,
opened up FP
and it was there. I placed the image in a page, published, both image and
page uploaded and the page displays fine.

Wes,

I didn't say it doesn't work, just that it is best to always use import or drag/drop to get the
external file into your current open FP web.

This was by far the best answer to my question as it gave me the details of
how to get the photos there. I did this, reinserted photos on 'normal' page,
auto thumbnailed, recalculated hyperlinks, published and still no photos came
out. The photos are great on both the 'normal' and 'preview' pages. Can you
think of any other reasons why they are not publishing?

Thomas,

I cannot tell whether you are agreeing with me or disagreeing. We both seem
to be recommending drag and drop.
