How do i import my e-mail folder back from my desktop?

I had showing one unread e-mail message beside my log-in name on my desktop.
Then i went and exported all my e-mail messages to my desktop as to try and
get rid of that so called one unread message. But now i cannot now retrieve
any of my old messages.
