How do I insert a selected portion of a song file into selected Powerpoint
slides? I have Office 2003 in Windows XP.

Insert/Movies and Sound/Sound from File.
Then right-click the sound icon and choose custom animation.
Double-click the sound in the custom animation taskpane.
On that first tab, put a time in the "start playing from" section.

See this as well:
Play sounds across multiple slides (A WAV runs through it)

I would suggest that you edit the sound in sound editing software before
inserting it into PPT, though, as putting a time in the "start playing from"
section doesn't always seem to work. Audacity is often suggested for this
type of thing. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

You'll need to use a program (I use Audacity) to edit the song, then insert
it like any sound in PP.
I find when dealing with music that using PhotoStory 3 is *much* easier. It
does all of the fading in and out for you.
However, even it wouldn't automaticall start in the middle. But it would
only take a few mintues to do that with Audacity.

The options in Custom Animation are limited to selecting when (which slide)
to start and stop the song - they don't allow you to use only a portion of
the song (I want to start playing music in the middle of the song). I
downloaded Audacity, but it apparently doesn't have a "digital signature" and
the recommendation from WIndows is to not run it. Is it a legitimate, safe
program to download and run.

Rich,
You should be able to right click the animation for your music and go to the
first tab. ON there you will find a setting that lets you start the song x
amount of time from the begining. Will that do what you want?

The problem is that it starts the song from the beginning. I want to get
into the song itself and have it start at a point 2:07 into the song,
beginning on slide 37. I don't see how to get the song to start playing at a
point other than at the beginning.

No, Kathy is saying that you should go to the Custom Animation task pane. Right
click your media object and select Effect Options. Under "Start Playing" you
have three choices. One is "From time:". Set that to 02:07 seconds.

If that doesn't make sense, go to Tools > Options > Edit and check to make sure
that you don't have the new features disabled.
