how do I insert ASCII characters without numeric key pad?

I am used to a regular keyboard.
Now I am using a laptop without numeric keypad. How can I insert ASCII
characters in office documents.

Most laptops do have the numeric keypad keys - mine are on MJKLUIOP789 in a
special shift mode, which I think is quite common.

Alternatively in Word 2002 and 2003 you have the option to enter the hex
value of the character followed by Alt+X.

Tony,
thank you for your response.
I am new to the laptop world. Could you expalin how do I access the numeric
keypad "on MJKLUIOP789 in a special shift mode" as you explain it.

thank you.

Sorry but I don't know your laptop!

On mine, the numbers are shown in blue at the top right corner of the keys.
There is an extra key at the bottom left marked "Fn" also in blue as well as
a NumLock key, again in blue. I presume (but cannot be absolutely certain)
that yours has something similar but, without seeing the keyboard, I don't
know exactly what.
