how do I insert my original art into a brochure I design

I have scanned my paintings into folders and into HP Image Zone Express.
Then I attempted to create a brochure through HP BrochureMaker, but the
images never download, though the screen seems to indicate that the process
is finished. I have tried opening the folder, manipulating the images and
saving them in different places, but nothing happens. Should I buy some
desktop publishing software? I am trying to sell portraits so I must use my
original art in the brochure.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
