How do I install Office XP Service Pack 3 from a CD?

H

hempster

Instead of downloading Office XP Service Pack 3 over a dial-up connection, I
checked a box for MSFT to mail me a CD. It came within days but with no
instructions. When I load the CD, there is no "Install Wizard" sort of thing
that walks you through installation. Any advice on what I should do with the
two folders, "FULLFILE" AND "STANDARD," that are on the CD?

Double click on the fullfile option and follow the wizards.

Many thanks. No wizard appeared, but there was a box that asked me where I
wanted to place the extracted files. I put them in the Microsoft Office
folder of my Program Files folder. I also extracted the stuff in the
"Standard" folder on the CD. Hope this was okay. Thanks again.

OK, sorry to be so thick on this but:

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop with MSFT Office Basic Edition 2003. I have
now successfully (though slowly) downloaded the Office 2003 Service Pack 2
over a dial-up connection, inserting when requested the Office 2003 CD that
came with my computer.

But the Office Update web page diagnostic told me that I also need to
download Office XP Service Pack 3. Hesitant to download it over my slow
connection, I several days ago checked a box somewhere on the MSFT site (I
can no longer find it) saying I wanted a CD, which came in the mail several
days later. When I followed your instructions below, I received a notice
saying I needed to insert my Office XP Professional CD. I don't have one
because the computer came with Office 2003. So I gave up for the day.

Last night, I tried downloading the Office XP update from the Office Update
webpage. After taking the hour to download it and then trying to install it,
I got the same message concerning the Office XP CD, with the additional
information that I could avoid using the Office XP CD (which, as I said, I
don't have) by downloading the "Fullfile", which would take 3 hours.

But, says I, Milly pointed out that I already have the "Fullfile" stuff on
my CD. When I went back and tried again to install the Fullfile stuff from
the CD, I got the same message telling me to insert my Office XP CD.

Thoughts? And thanks.

Perhaps because the CD is to update Office XP which must first be installed
on your computer. If you have Office 2003 and no Office XP family of
applications installed, then you do not need the Office XP Service Pack 3
CD.

If you have an Office XP family application such as FrontPage 2002,
Publisher 2002, Word 2002 etc installed, then use the install CD for that
application. Since you appear to have a new computer with Office 2003 Basic
pre-installed, you may also have pre-installed Microsoft Works Suite which
includes Word 2002. If so, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and
find Word 2002 and the Works add-in for Word and uninstall both. I am
assuming that you do not need both Word 2003 {from Office Basic} and Word
2002 from the Works Suite.

Thanks, Don. I'll take a look when I get home to my laptop.
