How do I keep the same word document from coming up automatically

The same document comes up every time I try to open a new one, what is
happening?

You have overwritten the file called normal.dot (or dotm if you have 2007).
Search for this file and delete it (with Word closed). Word will rebuild it
when you re-start.

I just deleted the doc with word closed; when I tried to open a new doc., there it was again.

Maybe I misunderstood you, I tried to delete the annoying document. Did you
mean to find the dotm and delete it? If so, what is it and where do I find
it? Thanks

With word closed, search for, to include hidden files, either normal.dot or
normal.dotm (depending on office version) delete any found
