How do I know I have a good back up?

Outlook does not act like other office applications. I have been exporting
my outlook contacts into a separate folder as a back up- How do I check to
see if it exported properly?

If I just use back up, how do I know it backed up properly?

In what sense?

Open it - file | open | ....

Why not just close Outlook and copy your PST file elsewhere? Or use the MS
PST backup utility? You don't mention your version of Outlook, which you
always should when posting in here....

I am using Outlook 2003 - I saved the file to My Docs - when I try to open it
I get an error message:

"You are attempting to open a file of type 'Office Data File' (.pst)
These files are used by the operating system and by various programs.
Editing or modifying them could damage your system. If you still want to
open the file, click Open with, otherwise, click Cancel.

When I click "Open", I get the message "windows cannot open this file" - it
needs to know what file created it. When I choose to select from a list,
Outlook is not one of the selections on the list provided.

This is what I consider to be different from other Office Applications.

Appreciate you help....

Ah - yes, that's true. You can't open a PST file that way - you have to
launch Outlook and use file | open. I'm not sure why that is, but it is.
