How do I know which shapes to use in a flowchart?

I have the basic flow chart shapes in Word, but I do not know what they mean
or how to use them. the instructions say to put the cursor on the shape for
a description but that does not work.

What Help is telling you is that if you hover your pointer over the button a
Tool Tip will appear containing the name of the shape you're pointing to.
It's possible that you have the Tool Tips turned off, but I depends on which
version of Word as to how to check.

In Word 2007 click the Office button & go to Word Options. In the Popular
Options make sure ScreenTip Style: is set to something other than Don't Show
ScreenTips.

In prior versions go to Tools> Customize - Options & check the setting there
to make sure ScreenTips display.

Once you find the shape you want, click the button then move your pointer to
the document & either click or drag to create the shape. When you select a
Connector hover your pointer on the edge of a shape to see the blue
connecting points appear. Drag from a connecting point of one shape to the
connecting point on another to create the connector.

The ScreenTips, however, just give you the names of the shapes. Word doesn't
provide any tutorials on Flowcharting, it just supplies the tools. The
apparent assumption being that those who use the tools either (a) know which
symbols & connectors to use for what purpose, or (b) don't care :)

You might try Google-ing for some tips on Flowcharting.
