How do I layout two sets of text with data merged from excel

I am trying to set up a mail merge document that needs two blocks of text
laid out on the right and left hand side using data imported from excel.
It is for a catalogue with exhibit details on the left and the exhibitor
details on the right.
it also needs a catalogue number on the left of the doucment as well.

Probably by using a Catalog (or in Word XP and later it is called
"Directory"), type mail merge main document in which you insert the text and
mergefields into the cells of a two column one row table - possibly with the
no borders.

Really need more information to know if this would give the desired result.
