How do I locate the cause of save-induced file permission error?

I'm trying to save a file to a thumb drive with other files on it and getting
a "file permission error" window on it. How do I find out which existing
file is causing the error?

Did you switch thumbdrives or insert it after Word was already working with files? If so, Word may not be able to locate the work
file it was using and can't proceed.

Working with removable drives with Word is a bit risky. If you need to do it then (a) have room on it and (b) turn on the option to
have a local copy of the file made by Word first.

For versions prior to Word 2007 it's in Tools=>Options=>Save
[Make local copy...]
For Word 2007 it's in
Office File Button=>Word Options=>Advanced=>Save
[Copy remotely stored files...]

Safer approach is to work with the files on your hard drive then copy them over to the removable when it's saved and closed.
