How do I make flexible catalog merge areas for variable entries?

I'd like to make a catalog that contains entries of varying lengths (and I'm
looking to avoid a lot of white space on the page). Could you tell me how I
can set the catalog merge area so that it will grow or shrink to accommodate
the exact amount of info in each entry?

I really appreciate your help.
