How do I make macrons over vowels in Word/Palatino?

I've been told that there's a way to set up Word so that the key
combination option-u <letter> will produce a macron over the letter in
question. But I have no idea how to set this up.

Can anyone out there help me?

In Mac OS 7, 8, or 9, you would need a Central European (CE) typeface
such as "Palatino CE".
