how do i make microsoft word my default e-mail attachment viewer?

I just got a new computer and some defaults are set differently than I had
them set up before. When I try to view a Word attachment on a received
e-mail or on the Internet, at first, a viewer I had never seen before would
open the document. It didn't do a very good job of reading anything that had
anything but text in them, and was bothersome. Somehow it seems I disabled
it, but I don't remember doing so, because now Word pops up instead....but it
comes up empty. Now I can't read my attachments at all.

I use Outlook 2003 and Internet Explorer 6. Word is also 2003. Can't
remember the name of the viewer.

Right-click a .doc file on your hard drive, choose "Open With", select
"Microsoft Office Word", and check the box labeled "Always use the selected
program to open this type of file". Click OK.

That did not work for me! This did :-
In WORD Tools/Options - General Tab
Untick the box (top right)
Allow Starting in Reading Layout
