How do I make org charts without a template?

How do I make an org chart without using a template. I tried it in SmartDraw
and it was fairly easy, but in Word I cannot get away from the template and I
dont know how to add "assistant" or additional person.
Thanks

It should be a simple point 'n' click operation, but where you point 'n'
click varies form one version of Word to another - since you don't mention
version it's hard to give you a more specific answer:)

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I am using the student/home 2007 MS office. I woul
like to start with one person and then add mangers,co-managers, assistants
etc.. I don't want to use a template sice it is too limiting.
Thank you.

I don't know what you mean by "template" here, but if you go to the Insert
Tab on the Ribbon you'll see SmartArt in the Illustrations group. When you
click that button you'll be provided with a Gallery of diagrams to choose
from - what you want is in the Hierarchy category. You can select any shape
in the resulting diagram and add a position relative to it from the Add
Shape list at the left end of the SmartArt Tools - Design Tab as well as
delete any shapes you don't need.

Your alternative is to use the tools in the Insert Tab - Shapes to draw your
own diagram using the Shapes & Connectors of your choice - But unless you
need something quite unique it's the much harder way to go :)

Thanks Bob,

It all start to make more sense and I was actually able to produce an org
chart with the SmartArt, what I call a template. The add shape did the trick.
Still a lot to learn, but your help got me sarted in the right direction.
