How do I make the envelope icon appear on the task bar when mail .

When mail is received, an icon that looks like an envelope appears on the
task bar. Now that I added Exchange to my accounts, the icon never appears
when new mail arrives. I see the fading window with the subject line in it
but not the envelope. Sometimes I miss the fading window.
