How do I modify theme layout?

I know I can modify the look of a theme by changing the graphics but I want to change the elements in the header and can't figure out how to do it. I see some theme templates have logos added and other areas/ How do I edit the header and footer and other borders of a theme to give them a different background color or add a logo? Thanks

Create your new images in an image editor
- you can also copy the existing theme images to you images folder from the _themes/themename folder and modify them w/ an image
editor, then run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

Then in FP File Import the new images into a folder - say images
Next modify the theme to use the new images and save as a new theme name
Format Theme (select the one you want to modify) Modify/Customize Graphics
- select your new images for buttons, background or banner, etc
