How Do I Open a Doc as Read-Only

Is there a way to voluntarily open a document as read-only?

For example, there is a document that other people are working on. If
someone is already in the doc when I try to open it, I get the "locked for
editing, open read only" box, which is good. But if I open the doc and they
are not already in it, when they go to open it, then THEY get that box. I
want to be sure that if I am looking at it, and they need to get in to edit
it, they are immediately able to. I do not want them to have to call and say
"hey, can you get out of the doc please?"

I know holding down certain keys or key combinations affects how a program
opens. Is there a combination (or any other way) to make sure that I'm
opening something in read only?

I use Office 03 & Windows XP.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Mae,

in Word File > Open in the Open box select the document you want to open
then go to the Open button on the bottom right of the box and click on the
little down ppointing arrow to the right of it, click Read Only! It might be
a little different in Word 2003, I've got XP.
